MEDWAY MESSENGER INDIVIDUAL SNOOKER COMPLETION GOODWIN RECLAIMS HIS CROWN SINCE 1981 Ron Goodwin of Woodcoombe recaptured the Medway Messenger Snooker League individual knockout crown for the first time since 1981when he beat Ryan Miskin (Players Club) in this years final.
The match a contrast of styles with Goodwin a long established league player playing a player resgisted with the league but has not played in the league this season. In a nervous first frame a break of 16 left Miskin 29-15 ahead with the colours left. The colours were shared until the black. Miskin had left the black mid table, but with the white safe on the side cushion until Goodwin produced a great pot to take the first frame.
Miskin never got going in the second and a break of 27 from Goodwin was enough to win the second.
The third was a carbon copy of the first, which also went to the black, Miskin held his nerve to take the black 47-41. In the next Goodwin edged ahead, though Miskin missed his chance when he was unable to get position off the penultimate red and never got back into the frame losing 57-24.
It looked ominous for Miskin at this stage but, to his credit he battled away and in frame five was 57- 33 ahead with the colours left. Goodwin took the first three colours but Miskin seemed down and out after missing a good chance to win the frame on the blue. Goodwin took the blue and pink but surprisingly refused a pot on the black to win the title. After several good safety shots from both players Miskin took his third frame on the black.
There followed a nervy final frame with neither player prepared to risk leaving a chance each other. Miskin went ahead for the first tine in the match only for Goodwin to come back on the colours. And when he potted the blue and pink for a 51-36 win the title was his. SNOOKER SECTION REPORT 2007- 2008 SEASON
Looking back to the season on a whole us as a team lacked the killer instant, as on many occasions we missed vital balls which cost us as a team many points. This was showed in our position in the league as for the first tine we were out of the first three. This was the first time for many years but finishing forth still is not bad but my hopes as captain was higher than this, so hopefully we can do better next season. The Players of Strood won the league again to retain their title they won last year.
We also lost to the Players again in a tight battle as we did in last year's team cup final 4 frames to 3 but this time in the quarter finals.
In the Pairs cup Martin Gilbert and Dave Hirons went out in the early stages but Ron Goodwin and Malcolm Smith lost to the Players Club in the quarter finals 3 frames to 2 on the black ball.
In the Singles competition Martin and Dave went out early but Ron Goodwin beat his partner Malcolm Smith on his way to reach and win the Medway Messenger title he won 28 years ago to finish our season on a high.
Ron beat Ryan Miskin of the Players Club 4 frames to 3 in a tight battle where Ron won the first game on the black ball. During his match Ron lost 3 black ball games to Ryan also missing a match winning ball pink in the Sixth. Ron won the match on the blue in the final frame a full report will be in Mondays Medway Messenger 12/05/2008 and on Woodcoombes web site in the near future.
I also would like to thank all my team members for playing this season, also thanks to the Club for using their facilities. On this note we would like to revert back to the table by the entrance because as a team we feel the table by the pool table is a lot tighter and through this we missed opportunities which gives the opposition more of a chance to win frames. Finally we need a new set of snooker balls as the balls have lost all their shine and we can get no reaction from them.
Thankyou.
Captain Ron Goodwin
THE STORY SO FAR This season is a year of it's and buts, but as the League shows we were not good enough to get into the top 2. This year missed chances throughout the season have seen us near the top but slid to forth spot with two weeks to remaining of the season. Got to try harder next season.
DETAILS OF LEAGUE CAN BE FOUND IN THE MEDWAY MESSENGER MONDAYS
Once again Players have got the better of us with them beating us in the quarter-final of the Team Challenge 4-3 as the did in last years final. Ron Goodwin and Malcolm smith also lost 3 frames to 2 on the black ball also against the Players club again in the quarter final. In other matches Martin Gilbert and Dave Hirons lost in the early rounds of the singles and their doubles. Now for some good news Ron Goodwin played his singles semi final against Tony Sharp of the players club winning 3 frames to 2 with the final being held at the Palm Cottage Club Gillingham

Black balls cost Woodcoombe as Gillingham A won 3 frames on the black ball in a tight contested match with good snooker played most of the night.
The first was a comfortable win for Matt Howard as he potted steadily to beat Malcolm Smith. Ron Goodwin levelled the tie as he won on the black ball against Steve Evans. The next two frames also went to the final ball but this time they went to Gillingham . Matt Howard played well with some outstanding long shots to beat Ron Goodwin. The last was the best of the night as Dave Hirons made a 35 break to edge in front but once again on the colours Steve Evans manage to pot the final ball to give Gillngham A 5-1 win.
